FFM Video: Minnesota’s own ACORN Whistleblower

In a new video produced by the Freedom Foundation of Minnesota, you’ll meet Karen Inman, Minnesota’s own ACORN whistleblower. Inman was fired from ACORN’s national board of directors for blowing the whistle on the corrupt organization in 2008, more than a year before the BigGovernment.com video expose prompted Congress to defund the discredited advocacy group.

Inman, a 73-year-old retired school teacher from St. Paul, was punished for standing up and demanding honesty and transparency. Now follow her as she continues her fight for greater accountability at ACORN.

FFM and Arthur Laffer: The true costs of health care “reform”

FFM recently released an analysis regarding the costs of the proposed Washington health care “reforms” on Minnesotans. Prepared by renowned economists including Dr. Authur Laffer, The Prognosis for National Health Insurance: A Minnesota Perspective analyzes the impact of a $1 trillion increase in federal health care outlays being considered by under various congressional proposals.

The report emphasizes the need for patient-centered solutions and closing the “health care wedge,” the separation of effort and reward by which a patient understands the true costs of their health care and is therefore driven to be more efficient in his or her spending. The authors urge Congress to work toward a solution that will not penalize the seventy percent of Americans who are happy with their current health care.

For other serious reform ideas, check out the videos of FFM’s recent health care event featuring Dr. Regina Herzlinger of the Harvard Business School and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Medical Progress. Dr. Herzlinger makes the case for “consumer-driven health care reform,” which would encourage greater competition among insurance providers, give individuals a much wider array of health insurance options than they currently have, and significantly reduce the overall cost of health care. It would also move the country away from the inefficient and burdensome employer-provided health care model.

About those stimulus jobs…

Where are the jobs promised by the economic stimulus package? In a Star Tribune op-ed piece, FFM Investigative Director Tom Steward reviews the promises and projections made by Minnesota lawmakers and the White House. As Steward explains, the reality has not lived up to the hype, and job creation has fallen far short of their projections. And not just in Minnesota.

Oregon officials praised how the stimulus helped create over 3,000 new jobs in the program’s first three months. However, these were not full time jobs as one may presume. Rather, these jobs were only meant for 35 hours of work on average, less than an average full-time work week. In explaining the numbers, Oregon House Speaker Dave Hunt said, “This stimulus plan was intentionally designed for short-term projects to pump needed jobs and income into families, businesses and communities struggling to get by. No one ever said these would be full-time jobs for months at a time.”

On the other side of the country, New Hampshire officials promised 16 thousand new jobs would be brought into the state when President Obama signed the stimulus package. As of August, New Hampshire had tallied a grand total of 796 new full-time jobs.

$787 billion is a lot of money, but as stimulus critics have said all along, government can’t spend its way to prosperity.
