Local Gov't Accountability Roundup: 8/26/11

LITTLE FALLS:  Council votes to raze historic house for parking lot   City officials say they didn’t buy the now bat-infested 1893 property to preserve it but rather to use the land.

MARSHALL: City Refuses to pay State More for Bungled Library Project   Despite concerns the Minnesota Department of Corrections might not respond well, city councilors voted against paying and in effect rewarding MINNCOR $3,200 for shelves covered in original bid but never provided by the state.

LITCHFIELD:  Meeker county board agrees to televise meetings  It may not exactly be “must-see TV” but county commissioners approved purchase of four cameras to make board meetings more accessible to taxpayers.

WINONA:  County board to publically discuss all policy changes before implementation  More hands on approach taken by board members who say hiring decisions and other issues deserve more than a rubber stamp.

RED WING:  County May Tap into Reserves for $500,000 to avoid further cuts “Each commissioner had his own ideas about handling the funds, from reducing the Sentence to Service program to privatizing the county’s mental health unit to eliminating the recycling center.”
