Last month, a divided Brainerd city council voted to institute new sign regulations that will allow property owners to display only two signs and two flags in their yards.
Apparently, their version of the First Amendment says that a property owner can only have “two ground-mounted signs no bigger than 3 feet high or a total of 6 square feet and two flags. There are no size restrictions on flags” — for now.
Furthermore, according to the Brainerd Dispatch, the ordinance currently doesn’t restrict what “type of message can be on a sign” but they are adamant that the signs “not obstruct the view of a driver coming up to an intersection.” Nor can the signs be lit.
The new ordinance restricting free speech passed by a 4-3 vote. It matters who you elect.
